American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Washington Endorses Dr. Kim Schrier

“Dr. Schrier is the strongest candidate in the 8th District race, and we are excited to award her our sole endorsement. Her work serving families as a pediatrician has given her the knowledge and perspective she needs to effectively advocate for the needs of working people.” – AFT Washington President Karen Strickland

Issaquah, WA, May 25, 2018—The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Washington awarded its sole endorsement in the 8th Congressional District race to Dr. Kim Schrier. AFT Washington represents thousands of faculty from community and technical colleges and pre-K through 12 classified employees, including nutrition services, custodians, bus drivers, and classroom assistants.

“Dr. Schrier is the strongest candidate in the 8th District race, and we are excited to award her our sole endorsement,” said Karen Strickland, AFT Washington President. “Her work serving families as a pediatrician has given her the knowledge and perspective she needs to effectively advocate for the needs of working people. Kim is committed to strengthening public schools, empowering the employees who keep schools thriving, and ensuring that our education systems, from early learning through post-high school, help every resident in her district achieve their aspirations. Our members trust Kim to fight for education, healthcare, workplace fairness, and economic justice. We are honored to stand behind Kim Schrier and help send a passionate voice for education employees to Congress.”

Dr. Schrier is the only candidate in the 8th District race who has consistently spoken out against attempts to undermine public education by investing federal dollars in private schools, including opposing plans to make private school tuition tax deductible. The mom of a third grade public school student and product of public education from elementary through medical school, Dr. Schrier will focus on improving and supporting our public education system and will fight any measures to encourage privatization.

“As the daughter of a public school teacher, I am truly honored to receive AFT Washington’s endorsement,” said Dr. Kim Schrier. “I am committed to strengthening our education system and empowering teachers by raising teacher pay, increasing federal funding to schools and colleges, and bringing more local control to school districts. I have been an advocate for public education my entire life, and I look forward to working with AFT Washington to champion pro-teacher policies in Congress.
